The Catamaran Experience: What You Actually Get
Large catamaran tours are the most marketed boat trips in Mallorca. They are easy to find, relatively cheap per person, and they promise a day of sun, sea, and fun. But here is what the marketing does not always tell you:
- Shared with strangers: Most catamarans carry 30 to 100 passengers. You will be sharing the deck, the swimming stops, and the bathroom with people you have never met.
- Fixed schedule: The route is pre-set. If you love a particular cove and want to stay longer, or if the group wants to move on, there is no flexibility.
- Motor-powered: Despite the mast, most commercial catamarans operate under engine power. You will not feel wind in the sails because the sails rarely go up.
- Party atmosphere: Many catamaran tours are designed as party boats with loud music. Great if that is what you want, less so if you are looking for relaxation or a family experience.
- Limited water access: With 50+ people aboard, swimming time is often limited and the water around the boat gets crowded quickly.
The Private Sailing Yacht Experience
A private sailing trip with Alegria Sailing is a fundamentally different experience:
- Just your group: Up to 11 guests, all people you know and have chosen to be with. The entire yacht is yours.
- Real sailing: The sails go up, the engine goes off, and you feel the wind and the sea. This is actual sailing, not just being driven around on water.
- Complete flexibility: Love a cove? Stay as long as you want. Want to change direction? Just ask. Your skipper adapts the route to your mood and the conditions.
- Access to hidden coves: A 40-foot sailing yacht draws less water than a large catamaran, which means we can access narrow, shallow coves that the big boats cannot reach.
- Personalised experience: Choose your music, set the pace, decide when to swim and when to sail. This is your day.
Price: Is a Private Yacht Really More Expensive?
This is the question everyone asks, and the answer often surprises people.
A typical catamaran tour in Mallorca costs between 60 and 90 euros per person. A private yacht trip with Alegria Sailing works out to approximately 100 euros per person when you fill the boat (up to 11 guests).
For that extra 20-30 euros per person, you get:
- A private yacht (not shared with 50 strangers)
- All-inclusive drinks and food
- A dedicated skipper who is there only for your group
- Flexible itinerary and timing
- Access to coves the catamarans cannot reach
- A real sailing experience, not a bus ride on water
When you calculate the per-person cost for a group of 6 or more, the difference between a private yacht and a catamaran ticket is remarkably small — and the difference in experience is enormous.
Safety and Comfort
A monohull sailing yacht moves differently to a catamaran. It heels (tilts) when sailing, which some people love and others find surprising at first. The heel is gentle, perfectly safe, and is one of the things that makes sailing feel exciting and alive.
Catamarans are more stable and do not heel, which is one of their advantages. However, in a swell they can have a less pleasant pitching motion that some people find more uncomfortable than the steady heel of a monohull.
Both types of vessel are very safe. The key difference is that on a private yacht, your skipper is focused entirely on your group's comfort and safety, whereas on a catamaran with 80 passengers, individual attention is necessarily limited.
Who Should Choose What?
Choose a catamaran party boat if:
- You are a solo traveller or couple wanting to meet other people
- You specifically want a party atmosphere with DJ and dancing
- Budget is the absolute priority and you are travelling alone
Choose a private sailing yacht if:
- You are a group of friends, a couple, or a family
- You value privacy, flexibility, and a personalised experience
- You want to actually sail, not just sit on a motorised platform
- You want to reach hidden coves away from the tourist crowds
- You are celebrating something special — birthday, anniversary, proposal
- You want an authentic Mediterranean experience, not a tourist product
The Verdict
Both experiences have their place. But if you are reading this article, you are probably already looking for something more than a standard tourist boat trip. A private sailing yacht offers an experience that is more personal, more beautiful, and more memorable than anything a large catamaran can provide.
At Alegria Sailing, we have welcomed guests who tried the catamaran first and then booked with us. Without exception, they say the same thing: they wish they had done the private yacht from the start.
